WOMAN: For the second program in our series about locally run businesses, we meet Simon Winridge, co-founder of the very successful Winridge Forest Railway Park. Welcome, Simon. Perhaps you can begin by telling us how it all started.

MAN: In the 1970s, my wife Liz and I bought about 80 acres of sheep-farming land. We decided to settle there and raise our children.

MAN: Soon we had a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Dunca . The place was perfect for them, especially because they loved trains.

MAN: Over time they built a large miniature railway track. I also started building model locomotives.

MAN: Later I visited a theme park near Birmingham and realized we could create something even better ourselves.

MAN: So in 1984 we opened our own small park to the public for just one month in July, which is usually the driest month.

MAN: I managed the park business while Liz continued working on the farm.

MAN: It soon became clear that the idea was a success. We expanded the railway track and improved the landscape by planting trees and cutting paths through the rock.

MAN: The new landscape also attracted more wildlife.

MAN: Today the park is open all year round, and it has become one of the most popular visitor attractions in the region.

MAN: We now receive about 50,000 visitors each year, and more than 1.5 million people have visited since it opened.

MAN: Because of the local geology, building tunnels is quite difficult.

MAN: One of our newer attractions is the Go-Kart arena, which covers about 120 square metres.

MAN: We had to level the ground carefully for safety reasons.

MAN: The track is designed for children aged 5 to 12.

MAN: The most popular kart is the Formula 1 Kart, which children often compete to ride.

MAN: Our latest development is a newly landscaped attractio .

SPEAKER: Good morning. In the last few lectures, I've been talking about the history of domestic building constructio , but today I want to begin looking at some contemporary experimental designs for housing.

SPEAKER: I'm going to start with a house that is built more or less under the ground. One interesting aspect of this project is that the owners, who were professionals but not architects, decided to manage the project themselves.

SPEAKER: Their main aim was to build a house that was as environmentally friendly as possible. At the same time, they wanted somewhere peaceful to live.

SPEAKER: They had both grown up in a rural area and disliked urban life. So first they searched for a suitable site.

SPEAKER: Eventually they found a disused stone quarry in a beautiful location. The price was relatively low, and they liked the idea of recycling the land, because the quarry had become an ugly blot on the landscape.

SPEAKER: They consulted several architects and examined different design proposals before selecting the final one.

SPEAKER: The house design is an underground structure built into the earth, and it has two storeys.

SPEAKER: The north, east, and west sides are covered by earth, while the south-facing side slopes outward and is exposed to light.

SPEAKER: This side is made of a double layer of strong glass. On this sloping wall there are also photovoltaic tiles, which collect solar energy.

SPEAKER: The walls are also surrounded by a layer of foam insulatio to reduce heat loss.

SPEAKER: One important feature of the house is that it is highly energy efficient.

SPEAKER: Sunlight enters through the glass wall, and inside the house there are many mirrors and windows that help spread the light throughout the building.

SPEAKER: The solar tiles also convert sunlight into electricity. In the future, the house might even produce an electricity surplus, allowing the owners to sell energy to the national grid.

SPEAKER: Wherever possible, recycled materials were used. For example, the floors are made from reclaimed wood, and the owners reused their existing furniture instead of buying new items.

SPEAKER: Waste from the house is treated through an organic purification system. The water is filtered through reed beds planted in the garden.

SPEAKER: This means the house does not pollute the land or use harmful chemicals.

SPEAKER: However, the construction process itself did harm the environment, mainly due to the large amount of concrete used.

SPEAKER: Concrete production releases large quantities of carbon dioxide, and during construction this house produced about 70 tons of CO₂.

SPEAKER: Fortunately, this environmental carbon debt is expected to be recovered within about 15 years.

SPEAKER: After that period, the house will operate in a completely environmentally sustainable way.

SPEAKER: Because of this, eco-housing like this may become much more common in the future.
